Emma @ The Abbey Theater

We in Dublin’s NIC LCSP would like to say a big thank you to The Abbey Theatre, Aoife on the Abbey’s Community and Education Engagement Team and their benefactors for offering the opportunity to 20 residents across the NIC to see a modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma during January.

Residents of Killarney Court, Fr. Scully House, and Chancery Court attended this fantastic event and our Community Safety Wardens joined Chancery Court residents at the Wednesday matinee, continuing to build trusted relationships with residents across the North Inner City.

The reaction to the play was overwhelming and our phones and emails have been inundated with positive feedback and fabulous photos. Here’s a snapshot of what one of the residents had to say;

“We had an unforgettable evening at the Abbey Theatre. Initially, there was some scepticism about how this contemporary adaptation would be received, especially among neighbours in their 70s and 80s. However, the performance turned out to be a hit, with everyone thoroughly enjoying the unique and off the wall interpretation of the classic novel. Many attendees, who had never been to a theatre before, described it as their best night in years. One audience member mentioned she would have preferred; the two girls going together; to have a different end, but overall, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. After the play, we had a lively discussion about the themes and how women are often pressed into roles. It was wonderful to see a new side of our neighbours and engage in such meaningful conversations.”

A delighted Karin Ahlers and all the residents of Killarney Court said; “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Abbey Theatre and Dublin North Inner City Partnership for making this night possible. Special thanks to the Abbey Theatre for providing the tickets and to their staff for being so kind and supportive. Everyone is eager to repeat this experience soon!”

Annie Byrne, Fr. Scully House, also shared her thoughts on the evening too; “It was a great evening and very entertaining. We thought the play was very up to date, but remained faithful to the original book. My friend and I were very impressed with all the cast and the colourful costumes, but special mention has to go to the main character, Emma, who had a lot of lines (played by Toni O’Rourke)”

On behalf of Dublin NIC LCSP, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude for providing this wonderful opportunity to the residents of the NIC. The experience has been incredibly well received, and all the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. This initiative has only reinforced the commitment of Partner members to ensure that opportunities to attend the arts and participate in community events foster a sense of safety and pride in our local neighbourhood. Special mention also to DCC Community Development Team working to support the community and for supporting us with this event.
