Anti-social Behaviour

Anti-social behaviour has been one of the most common themes raised by the community at neighbourhood meetings. The Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP) is working closely with Dublin’s North Inner City Communities and local services to address this issue, and make our city a safer and more vibrant place to live and visit. 

 

What is anti-social behaviour?

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) occurs when a person causes or, in the circumstances is likely to cause, to one or more persons who are not of the same household as the person:

• Harassment, or
• Significant or persistent distress, alarm, or fear of intimidation, or  
• Significant or persistent impairment of their use or enjoyment of their property.

Examples of anti-social behaviour include:

• Loud/nuisance noise
• Drug dealing/drug taking
• Violence, or threats of violence
• Graffiti, damage to property, vandalism
• Large groups of individuals continuously gathering outside or near a property, whose behaviour is causing alarm, distress, or intimidation (this may amount to ASB)
• Animal nuisance (such as dog fouling)

 

The role of An Garda Síochána

An Garda Síochána has allocated a local Community Garda to each area in Dublin’s North Inner City. To find out who the community guard in your locality is please check on our Local Community Safety Map here: https://arcg.is/14L810.

If you experience issues of persistent anti-social behaviour, you should report these matters directly to your local community Garda, or via email to dmr.northcentral.community@garda.ie. 

Crime Prevention Officers are trained to encourage, promote and advise on crime prevention in private and business communities. The local Crime Prevention Officer for our area is Dermot Harrington. Dermot is based in Store Street Station and can be contacted on 01 666 800.

The role of Dublin City Council

DCC has in place a strategy to tackle anti-social behaviour. This applies to areas where Dublin City Council has Tenancy Dwellings, Tenant (Relevant) Purchaser Dwellings, Rental Accommodation Scheme Dwellings (RAS) and Halting Sites, Chapter 4 Tenancies, Apartment Tenant Purchasers and Incremental Purchasers.

If you are a victim of Anti-Social Behaviour from a Dublin City Council tenant, tenant (relevant) purchaser or licencee (halting site), or from a member of their household, you can contact your local Area Housing Office to make a complaint:

The role of the LCSP

If you are experiencing serious or persistent anti-social behaviour you should contact your local Community Garda, Garda station, or Dublin City Council (where appropriate).

If there issue which do not require a direct policing response, or issues which should be address along with a direct policing response you should contact the LCSP. These issue may include:

• Improved lighting
• Area enhancement
• Engagement with youth and community services, etc.
