In early 2021 the Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP) met with a representative group of delivery drivers to discuss their ideas, and concerns about their safety in Dublin’s North Inner City. These meetings were held following a series of increased tensions, and two tragic incidents which had occurred within the North Inner City.
A number of delivery drivers had noted that bike safety was a key concern. Many delivery drivers are reliant on their bike for both transport, and for their main source of income. The loss of a bike through theft could put a temporary, or more permanent, halt to their livelihood.
To assist in addressing the concerns raised, the LCSP met with members of An Garda Síochána (Store Street). It was noted that a number of lost or stolen bikes, scooters etc. often remain unclaimed as the owners cannot be identified.
An Garda Síochána kindly agreed to trial a bike marking scheme, to help in the identification of delivery drivers bikes/scooters, should they ever be lost or stolen. The scheme allowed delivery drivers to register their bike and have them engraved with a unique identifier, free of charge.
The initial bike marking trial took place over two days, outside Store Street Garda Station. This event also provided an opportunity for delivery drivers and members of An Garda Síochána to work together, building a new and positive set of community relationships.
